Why this, why now
The independent insurance agency model is under more sustained pressure right now than it's been in decades. Carriers are consolidating. Customer expectations are being shaped by industries that move faster than insurance does. And the gap between agencies that evaluated technology carefully and built the right foundation versus agencies still running on outdated workflows is widening every year.
Most agency owners feel the pressure. They're not short on advice about what to do, either. But most of that advice comes from vendors with something to sell, consultants who studied the industry from the outside, or speakers who left operations years ago.
What's been harder to find is someone operating inside it right now. Sitting inside real agencies on real technology decisions, with no platform agreements and no vendor relationships pulling the conclusions in any direction.
That's the gap this site exists to fill. And it's the gap I've spent 8 years closing.
The story
I started in insurance the same way most people do. Licensed, cold calling, learning as I went. What I figured out early (and this has stayed consistent for 8 years) is that the producers and agency owners pulling ahead weren't working harder than everyone else. They had better systems. They knew which technology was worth their time. I spent a long time trying to understand exactly how that happened.
What I kept seeing, inside agency after agency, was a specific pattern. The organizations struggling with technology weren't buying bad platforms. They were putting modern platforms on top of workflows and habits that were built for a different era. The gap between what the demo promised and what went live six months later had a consistent root cause: the foundation wasn't there to receive the platform. Once I saw that pattern clearly, I saw it everywhere.
That observation drove everything I've built since.
I'm currently CTO of Virtual Intelligence, where we hire, train, and place virtual employees inside independent agencies across the country. A 200+-person team. Real agencies, real decisions, every day. I'm also CTO of The Insurance Alliance, a four-location agency in Illinois and Indiana, which means I run technology for a real operation, consequences included. I co-founded NexAgency and the IndieTech Experience, which exists specifically to give independent agency owners honest conversations about technology without a vendor controlling the agenda. And I host the MVP Podcast on the Agency Intelligence Network, where I've spent years in conversation with the producers, owners, and operations leaders actually figuring this out in the field.
At home in Greenfield, Indiana, I'm husband to Cailee and dad to two daughters. I coach high school varsity baseball, which, if you spend five minutes talking with me, probably makes complete sense.
The thing I keep coming back to: the agencies losing ground aren't missing the right tool. They're missing the foundation that makes any tool work. That's the conversation I bring to every stage, and it's what this site is built around.
What I actually teach
I call myself the InsurTech Translator because that's the most accurate description of what I do.
The independent insurance industry has no shortage of platforms, vendors, and voices telling agencies what to buy. What most agencies are short on is someone who can sit across from a vendor pitch, evaluate it against how the agency actually operates, and give an honest read on what they found. That's been my job for 8 years. No platform agreements. No referral arrangements. Just the evaluation.
After working inside the industry selling premiums myself, and helping tons of independent agencies, here's what I can tell your audience, whether they're in a conference session or reading this at their desk:
Which technology categories are producing real results in independent agencies right now, and which are still vendor roadmap promises.
The questions that cut through any demo in under 30 minutes.
A framework for building the foundation that makes any platform deliver on what it promised.
Why most technology implementations run into trouble before they even start.
